Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of Dear Edward comes a poignant and engrossing family story that asks: Can love make a broken person whole?

"Hello Beautiful is exactly that: beautiful, perceptive, wistful。 It's a story of family and friendship, of how the people we are bound to can also set us free。 I loved it。"--Miranda Cowley Heller, author of The Paper Palace

William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him--so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it's as if the world has lit up around him。 With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family's dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all。 With the Padavanos, William experiences a newfound contentment; every moment in their house is filled with loving chaos。

But then darkness from William's past surfaces, jeopardizing not only Julia's carefully orchestrated plans for their future, but the sisters' unshakeable devotion to one another。 The result is a catastrophic family rift that changes their lives for generations。 Will the loyalty that once rooted them be strong enough to draw them back together when it matters most?

An exquisite homage to Louisa May Alcott's timeless classic, Little WomenHello Beautiful is a profoundly moving portrait of what is possible when we choose to love someone not in spite of who they are, but because of it。

I love a good family drama and Hello Beautiful fits the bill! I loved this book。 It has become one of my favourites of the year。I loved its characters, I loved its themes, and I absolutely loved how it was written。 It’s a novel about love and loss and family, and self-discovery and about something near and dear to my heart, it is about sisters。 Beautifully written, Hello Beautiful is a novel not to be missed。 I was lucky enough to be sent an advanced digital copy, but today it will be out on bookshelves and I’m about to buy myself a hard copy to have on my I loved this book。 It has become one of my favourites of the year。I loved its characters, I loved its themes, and I absolutely loved how it was written。 It’s a novel about love and loss and family, and self-discovery and about something near and dear to my heart, it is about sisters。 Beautifully written, Hello Beautiful is a novel not to be missed。 I was lucky enough to be sent an advanced digital copy, but today it will be out on bookshelves and I’m about to buy myself a hard copy to have on my shelf to reread and share with others。If you’re already compiling a summer reading list this is definitely one to add!Thank you to Netgalley and Random House for the free copy。 。。。more

And what happens when tragedy strikes and threatens—perhaps even severs—that bond of loyalty? There’s so much to love and admire about this book: the way Napolitano masterfully captures the defining moments in two families’ lives over a span of 50 years, the sensitive exploration of the impact of mental illness, fascinating insights on the role of women in business in the 1980s, and even action-packed basketball scenes! (A huge plus for me, putting on my mom-of-three-basketball-crazed-boys hat。) Hello Beautiful is a book to treasure and share with friends and loved ones。 。。。more

As in "Dear Edward", Ann Napolitano has written a book that deals with life and death and those who are left behind。 In, " Hello Beautiful", we meet a family of four sisters and learn how different and similar they all are。 Their one constant is their love for one another that continues throughout their lives。 The subject of mental illness is also a theme in this wonderful story。 I laughed。 I cried。 And I ran through every emotion possible。 I loved this book! Hello Beautiful is proving to be a much loved book, and I seem to be a bit of an outlier since it wasn’t a big win for me。 There were a lot of things that I did like about this family drama。 I felt connected to the characters and their messiness, I appreciated the gentle nod to Little Women, and I liked the overall story。 I also really enjoyed the use of basketball in the story as a comfort and a constant to William。 I’m not a basketball fan, but I still thought it worked really well。 I just tho Hello Beautiful is proving to be a much loved book, and I seem to be a bit of an outlier since it wasn’t a big win for me。 There were a lot of things that I did like about this family drama。 I felt connected to the characters and their messiness, I appreciated the gentle nod to Little Women, and I liked the overall story。 I also really enjoyed the use of basketball in the story as a comfort and a constant to William。 I’m not a basketball fan, but I still thought it worked really well。 I just thought it needed a lot more editing。 It felt overly long and often repetitive, and I especially thought it got bogged down in character description。 The writing was good, but it was just too much。 To me, it was as if the author was challenged to describe the same character traits again and again in as many different ways as possible。My scroogiest complaint is the overuse of love。 I get that it’s the central theme of the book, and I actually like that, but the word “love” was used 271 times in this book。 (Yes, I actually checked on my kindle because I wondered if I was making a big deal out of nothing。) Between this and the characterization, there was just so much telling and not enough showing。 It’s quite possible that these are just issues that stood out to me; it certainly seems that way! What a winner。 Rich, engaging, flawed, and wonderful characters—check。 Simple prose that paints a vibrant, realistic world—check。 Themes full of thoughtfulness, depth, and relevance—check。Let’s start with the characters。 William Waters is a gentle, sensitive boy whose parents can’t get beyond grieving the death of their daughter。 He is stuck on the outside of life, a lonely place devoid of parental attention, much less affection。 When he finds basketball, he finds purpose and a sense of belonging, a connection with coaches and teammates。 Basketball is a powerful outlet for him but it can’t help him overcome the pain of not being loved well by his parents。Enter the boisterous, larger-than-life Padavano family。 Julia, who is the oldest daughter of four, is a mover and shaker。 She has plans for life and never doubts those plans will be accomplished。 She has such confidence it carries over to the people around her who mostly allow her to run the show。 Sylvie, the next sister in line and the one closest to Julia, is a sensitive dreamer, a bibliophile who enjoys kissing boys secretly amidst the library shelves。 The other two sisters, Cecelia and Emeline, are twins。 Cecelia’s an artist not limited by the family’s script for her life, and Emeline is a quiet nurturer。 Rose and Charlie Padavano are rearing their girls in Pilson, a working-class, mostly Italian neighborhood in Chicago, and we see early on that though Rose and Charlie are incompatible, they’ve made the decision to remain married, largely due to their Catholic faith’s expectations。The relationships between all of these characters weave together in beautiful tension, relatable conflicts, and heart-rending love。 Love, above all, is the driving force for all of these people—and they do become very real people, more than written characters on a page in a book。Napolitano deftly explores themes of love given and withheld, loss—of dreams and loved ones, secrets and their impact, the sacrosanct bond of sisterhood, the unending influence of mother- and fatherhood, and the vulnerabilities of marriage and friendship。 It is one of the richest family dramas I remember reading in a long time。The author pays tribute to the classic, and one of my personal all-time favorites, Little Women, which in and of itself takes authorial courage。 Happily, I can confidently say that Louisa May Alcott would be proud。 。。。more

I know that many have loved this book, but I'm sorry to say that I never felt very engaged with it。 It's a family drama set mainly in Chicago, and spans 40ish years in the Padavano family's life。 All the time spent in the 80's was enjoyable for this '80s teen, but I never connected with the sisters, and disliked many of their behaviors and the issues behind them。 There was so much drama, and much of it felt contrived to me, all the way to the ending。 There was also far more telling than showing, I know that many have loved this book, but I'm sorry to say that I never felt very engaged with it。 It's a family drama set mainly in Chicago, and spans 40ish years in the Padavano family's life。 All the time spent in the 80's was enjoyable for this '80s teen, but I never connected with the sisters, and disliked many of their behaviors and the issues behind them。 There was so much drama, and much of it felt contrived to me, all the way to the ending。 There was also far more telling than showing, and it made the story feel very wordy yet very rushed all at the same time。 I did really enjoy Dear Edward, so would read more by this author。 Thanks to Netgalley and Random House for the advance digital copy in exchange for my honest opinion! 。。。more

Beautifully written, Unexpectedly sad, but also hope and joy。 The author did a great job telling the story of 4 sisters and their intertwining lives。 Loved the references to Little Women throughout the book。

This lovely novel is part character novel, part family saga, about four sisters and a man who becomes entwined in their lives, over the course of three or so decades。 Ann Napolitano’s book Dear Edward was one of my top books of 2020, so I had high expectations for this one, and I wasn’t disappointed。 It’s quite different from Dear Edward, but shares that book’s quality of creating indelible characters and bringing them vividly to life。 It’s definitely a quiet book but the writing is just so love This lovely novel is part character novel, part family saga, about four sisters and a man who becomes entwined in their lives, over the course of three or so decades。 Ann Napolitano’s book Dear Edward was one of my top books of 2020, so I had high expectations for this one, and I wasn’t disappointed。 It’s quite different from Dear Edward, but shares that book’s quality of creating indelible characters and bringing them vividly to life。 It’s definitely a quiet book but the writing is just so lovely - reminds me of Ann Patchett which believe me is a high compliment! And the ending was just lovely and had me crying。 And can we talk about that gorgeous cover too?4。5 starsGrateful to have gotten to read an advanced copy (out this Tuesday 3/14/23) from Netgalley and the publisher。 。。。more

Hello Beautiful is a big, wonderful novel about a family of four sisters growing up in Chicago。 The oldest sister, Julia meets William who grew up within siblings and without love。 Told from the perspective of Julia, William, Sylvie and later Alice, the reader gets to understand unfolding events from these different viewpoints but never in a way that is repetitive rather in a way that enriches the reader’s experience。 This novel is absorbing and beautifully written。 It is a great follow up to De Hello Beautiful is a big, wonderful novel about a family of four sisters growing up in Chicago。 The oldest sister, Julia meets William who grew up within siblings and without love。 Told from the perspective of Julia, William, Sylvie and later Alice, the reader gets to understand unfolding events from these different viewpoints but never in a way that is repetitive rather in a way that enriches the reader’s experience。 This novel is absorbing and beautifully written。 It is a great follow up to Dear Edward and I can’t wait to read more from Ann Napolitano。 Thank you to NetGalley, the author and The Dial Press (Random House) for the opportunity to read this lovely novel。 。。。more
